What could
possibly go wrong when on a Tuesday evening you sit calm and relaxed in front
of your computer to watch Barça's first friendly match?
Finally,
after two whole months, you have the chance to watch again the team, the
youngsters from Masia, Tito in charge. Finally, you’ll get to see “your” Barça
when you were just on the verge of withdrawal syndrome!
Honestly,
what could go wrong?
And just
when the teams entered the field, a shadow came out of nowhere to blur out
something of Barça's glow. I just could not believe my eyes! On the right
sleeve, I saw some… herbs! In all likelihood, they will appear only for
friendly matches since there is the place for the labels of the Champions
League and Liga BBVA. But that does not make a big difference.
Unicef's
logo was what made our eyes getting used to the view of a sponsor on our shirt.
But Unicef was a particular case: we were the ones giving money, not the ones
receiving them. TV3 Channel, is from Catalunya therefore we did not mind. Then came the Sidra tree, to shatter and erase the last glimpses of romanticism
in modern football.
Are all
that not enough? Did we need in addition protein and carbohydrate shakes to “digest”
better all the above mentioned?
For
heaven’s sake!
The need
for revenues is totally understandable, especially during a period when the
club’s finances are not exactly in bloom. No one would argue if the club’s
board of directors would take advantage of the team’s momentum, in the best way
possible.
But damn
it, there is a whole History behind all these! A little respect would not hurt…
Our team’s shirt tends more and more to look like a French team’s shirt,
covered with countless sponsors.
Until a few
years ago, the only thing on Barça’s shirt was the Catalan soul… Now it is
accompanied by tv channels, herb-shakes, trees etc…
O tempora o mores…
